Orientation and Mobility Course Descriptions

Immersion in Blindness Practicum

The immersion experience is designed to "immerse" students into the rehabilitation of blind adults who are learning to regain hope and independence. The immersion practicum consists of 400 hours throughout one quarter, and is completed nonvisually (i.e., while wearing a blindfold and using a white cane).

Introduction to Orientation and Mobility

Introduction to orientation & mobility provides an examination and application of the fundamental principles and theories of orientation & mobility and includes progressing through a graduated travel curriculum under sleepshades. Includes twenty hours of observation of certified mobility instructors.

Advanced Orientation and Mobility

Advanced orientation & mobility provides knowledge of advanced techniques of independent mobility in commercial and rural environments, use of public transportation, special travel situations, and applications for blind individuals who are multiply disabled. Includes a supervised applied practicum.

Orientation and Mobility Internship

O&M internship is a supervised, comprehensive opportunity to provide O&M instruction full-time to children and adults who are blind.

Rehabilitation Systems and Issues in Blindness

This course is an overview of rehabilitation concepts, processes, programs, services, professional responsibilities and ethics in the field of blindness.

Social and Psychological Aspects of Blindness

This course explores the psychological implications of blindness and provides students with a current and historical overview of practices/trends in the rehabilitation/education of individuals with visual impairments.

Developmental Psychology of Blindness

Developmental Aspects of Blindness emphasizes knowledge of physical, social, and emotional development of blind children including acquisition of motor, language and cognitive skills birth through adulthood.
